All About Unicorn Class
We are some of the youngest children in the school. We are a mixed class of Year One and Foundation Stage Children and there are 29 children in our class. The Year 1 children show us how we can work together to learn. As Foundation children we learn through the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum which we are assessed against to ensure that we are making progress towards achieving a Good Level of Development by the end of Foundation Year. We are using a programme called TAPESTRY which allows our parents to upload pictures and things that we are doing at home for our teacher to see in class which creates a very rounded picture of our development.
As Year One children we follow the National Curriculum and we often work with our Year One friends in Dragon Class especially when we are learning Phonics. We have to read every day at home and learn our tricky spellings and number bonds. We choose our level of challenge and always try our best.
This Spring term we are on an exciting journey through Storyland. We found the Queen of Storyland’s missing key and she came to collect it. She set us a problem to solve! We had to design a troll proof bridge. We sent her all our brilliant designs. She has many problems that we are busy helping her to solve. Her recent worry was that the troll had gone missing so we painted WANTED posters to put up in Storyland to help to find him.
We have been very busy learning and then rewriting the Story of the Three Billy Goats Gruff and we are currently learning Red Riding Hood.
In maths we have been learning about measuring. We have measured our feet, wooden blocks and just about everything else we could get our hands on! We have even enjoyed throwing feathers and measuring the distance they travel. We will go on to learn about weight and comparing weights and weighing using non standard units. Later in the term we will focus on addition and subtraction, 3D shapes and time.
This term, in Geography, we are enjoying learning all about maps and directions. We have drawn maps of Storyland and have had great fun finding places using maps, atlases and globes. We have learnt the countries in the UK! We are hoping to go on a walk around the village when the weather improves.
In Art and Design we have been looking at the work of L.S.Lowry. We have compared some of his most famous works and we can talk about the colours and techniques he used. At present we are working on our own ‘Lowry City Collages’ which will be on display very soon.
In Science we have been finding out about materials. We have been looking at lots of materials and next half term we will be doing investigations into which materials are suitable for different purposes
AIM HIGH, TRY YOUR BEST, GO FAR
