Overview
Our Science Curriculum
At Great Bardfield Primary School, our science curriculum is adapted from the Learning Challenge Curriculum (LCC) and thoughtfully shaped to meet the needs of our mixed age classes. Learning is built around engaging enquiries that spark curiosity, encourage thoughtful questioning and help pupils develop a secure understanding of key scientific concepts over time.
The curriculum is organised into two cycles, A and B, ensuring clear progression and carefully sequenced coverage across mixed age year groups. Progression documents show how each theme is structured around a main enquiry question, with clearly identified key knowledge that pupils are expected to learn and remember. This approach helps pupils build on prior learning and make meaningful links between topics.
Teaching places a strong emphasis on both scientific knowledge and enquiry skills. Pupils are encouraged to observe closely, ask questions, carry out investigations and explain their thinking using appropriate scientific language. Regular opportunities to revisit and retrieve learning help knowledge to stick and support long term understanding.
Individual lesson resources are adapted to ensure inclusivity, allowing all pupils to access learning and achieve success regardless of age, ability or need. Through practical experiences, discussion and reflection, pupils develop confidence as young scientists and a genuine enjoyment of learning about the world around them.
