Overview

Our Computing Curriculum

At Great Bardfield Primary School, our Computing curriculum is carefully sequenced to help pupils build knowledge over time and apply it confidently. Learning is organised through three key strands: Digital Literacy, Computer Science and Information Technology. These strands run throughout the curriculum, allowing children to revisit and build on prior learning while developing both understanding and practical skills.

Computing is taught through a spiral curriculum, where key concepts are regularly revisited and deepened. A two year rolling programme supports our mixed age classes and ensures clear progression and appropriate challenge for all pupils. We use high quality resources from Oak National Computing and Code.org to support engaging and purposeful learning.

E Safety is a vital part of our Computing curriculum and is woven into all units rather than taught in isolation. This ensures pupils develop a strong understanding of how to stay safe online and can apply this knowledge in real life contexts.

Computing is taught in weekly lessons, with learning recorded in class floor books in KS1 and foundation subject books in KS2 as appropriate. Lessons include regular retrieval practice to strengthen memory and understanding, and are mainly practical, with opportunities for unplugged learning. Pupil progress is supported through ongoing assessment for learning, enabling teachers to identify starting points, address misconceptions and adapt teaching effectively.

The Computing curriculum is monitored regularly to ensure high standards, consistency and continuous improvement, supporting all pupils to become confident, responsible and informed users of technology.
