Overview

At Great Bardfield Primary School, our maths curriculum is carefully planned to meet the needs of all our children, including our mixed-age classes. We use the Concrete–Pictorial–Abstract (CPA) approach, which means children first explore concepts using objects they can touch (Concrete), then represent ideas with diagrams (Pictorial), and finally use numbers and symbols (Abstract). This helps them understand maths deeply, remember it for the long term, and apply it with confidence.

Lessons are designed so children can work independently or with others, and all resources are adapted to make sure every child can succeed, no matter their age, ability, or needs.

Children start learning the basics of times tables in Reception, beginning with grouping and sharing. By Year 2, they count in 2s, 5s, and 10s. In Year 3, they add in groups of 3s, 4s, and 8s, and by Year 4, they learn all times tables up to ×12. In Years 5 and 6, children build fluency and confidence with multiplication and division, preparing them for future success in maths.

To help children practise and become quicker with their times tables, they have access to online learning tools such as Times Tables Rock Stars and Century. Century adapts to each child’s answers, giving extra support where needed or more challenging tasks to stretch their learning.

We ensure our children have opportunities to apply their mathematical skills and knowledge in real life scenarios and participate in a range of activities within our Enrichment days accessing Money Matters – Financial, Number Day (NSPCC), Christmas Shop till you drop and Design and Technology.

At Great Bardfield, we want every child to love learning maths, gain confidence, and be prepared to use it in the real world.
