EYFS Overview

At Great Bardfield Primary School, the Early Years Foundation Stage offers a warm, nurturing and inspiring start to your child’s educational journey. Set within a close-knit community, our youngest children are known, valued and supported as individuals from the very first day they walk through our doors.

Our EYFS children learn within a mixed Reception and Year 1 class. This mixed-age model is a real strength of our provision. Younger children benefit from the positive role-modelling of older pupils, developing confidence, language and independence through daily interaction. At the same time, Year 1 pupils deepen their understanding by demonstrating, explaining and leading, which strengthens their own learning and sense of responsibility. The result is a calm, family-like environment where collaboration, kindness and aspiration flourish naturally.

Our curriculum is carefully planned to meet the needs of all learners within the class. Reception children access a high-quality EYFS curriculum built around purposeful play, exploration and high-quality adult interaction. Learning is thoughtfully sequenced and adapted to ensure that every child, regardless of age or starting point, makes strong progress.

We place a strong emphasis on developing communication and language, early reading, writing and mathematics, alongside creativity, resilience and positive relationships. Our rich indoor and outdoor environments provide daily opportunities for exploration, problem-solving and discovery, making full use of our beautiful rural surroundings.

Partnership with families is at the heart of what we do. In our small school, relationships are strong and communication is open, ensuring that each child’s interests, strengths and needs are understood and supported.

By the end of the Early Years, our children are confident, curious and independent learners who are well-prepared for the next stage of their education — and who carry with them a genuine love of learning
