Fundamental British Values Information
At Great Bardfield Primary School, Fundamental British Values are an integral part of lessons, assemblies, pupil councils and everyday school life. We aim for all pupils to engage in democratic decisions, understand the importance of rules and fairness, feel empowered to make choices and express themselves and show respect for others while celebrating diversity. Through these experiences, pupils develop a deep understanding of British values and live out our school values of Courage, Compassion and Community.
Democracy
- Pupils contribute to school life and take responsibility for their actions
- Opportunities through School Council, Multi-Schools Council, Wellbeing Council and Eco Council where all members are voted in by pupils
- Classroom discussions and assemblies explore decision-making and fair choices, and in History, PSHE and English pupils engage in debates, learn about British government and develop persuasive writing skills
Rule of Law
- Pupils learn about rights, responsibilities and consequences
- Classroom rules are created collaboratively to promote fairness
- Restorative approaches encourage reflection and understanding, and in History, Science and PSHE pupils explore laws, safety rules and responsibilities
Individual Liberty
- Pupils are encouraged to express themselves and share opinions
- Equal opportunities allow all pupils to achieve their potential
- Lessons encourage listening and respecting every voice, and in Art, Music, English and PSHE pupils explore personal creativity, debates and rights
Mutual Respect and Tolerance
- As an inclusive school, we celebrate the diversity and achievements of our whole community
- Pupils explore different cultures and beliefs through curriculum projects, assemblies and visits
- Displays around school reinforce British values and encourage kindness, respect and community, while in RE, Geography and History pupils study world religions, global communities and diverse cultures and historical figures
