Overview

At Great Bardfield Primary School, Spanish is taught across Key Stage 2 to develop pupils’ confidence, curiosity and enjoyment in learning a modern foreign language. We use the Lightning Languages curriculum to ensure learning is well sequenced and enables pupils to make substantial progress in Spanish, in line with the National Curriculum.

Lessons are built around the three key pillars of language learning: vocabulary, grammar and phonics. Pupils regularly revisit and apply prior learning through speaking, listening, reading and writing activities, allowing them to build secure knowledge over time. Learning progresses from words and phrases to simple sentences and conversations, supporting pupils to communicate with increasing confidence and accuracy.

Spanish lessons at Great Bardfield are inclusive and engaging, with teaching adapted to meet the needs of all learners. Cultural learning is woven throughout the curriculum, helping pupils to understand and appreciate life in Spanish-speaking countries and supporting our school values of respect and curiosity.

By the end of Key Stage 2, pupils leave Great Bardfield with a strong foundation in Spanish and the confidence and enthusiasm to continue language learning at secondary school.
