Overview

At Great Bardfield Primary School, history learning is all about curiosity, connection and understanding the past. Through engaging topics, children make sense of the world they live in and the stories that came before, building a strong sense of identity, belonging and respect for others.

Our History curriculum is adapted from the Learning Challenge Curriculum to suit our school community. Lessons start with big questions that spark discussion and enquiry, then break learning into clear, manageable steps. Children develop a deep understanding of key periods and events while learning how historians investigate, analyse evidence and communicate their ideas confidently.

Themes such as settlements, trade and human interaction with the environment run through our topics, helping children make links across subjects and connect national and global history to our own village. Learning is revisited regularly so knowledge sticks.

History at Great Bardfield is inclusive by design. Lessons are carefully adapted so all children, including those with additional needs, can access the same rich content. Teachers check understanding regularly to ensure children keep up rather than catch up, and learning is reinforced through discussion, reading, research and practical activities.

By the time children leave our school, they have a solid foundation of historical knowledge and the skills, language and curiosity they need to continue learning with confidence.
