Overview
Our PE curriculum is shaped by a clear intent: to help every child develop the physical skills, confidence, and positive attitudes they need to lead active, healthy lives. Using the Twinkl PE Mastery Scheme, we provide a structured and progressive programme that supports children in mastering fundamental movement skills before applying them in a wide range of sports and activities. This ensures that pupils build strong foundations and deepen their understanding year by year.
Children experience a rich variety of physical activities including dance, gymnastics, athletics, games, and outdoor challenges. Lessons are practical, engaging, and designed to help children understand how their bodies move, how to improve their performance, and how to work effectively with others. A key part of our intent is ensuring that PE is inclusive for all. Staff adapt lessons thoughtfully so that every child can participate, succeed, and feel proud of their progress—regardless of their starting point, confidence level, or physical ability.
Our PE curriculum also supports children’s wider personal development. Through our curriculum, pupils learn resilience, cooperation, fairness, and respect. They are encouraged to reflect on their effort, celebrate improvement, and recognise the importance of staying active for both their physical and mental wellbeing.
At Great Bardfield, we are proud members of the Uttlesford School Sports Partnership, which gives our children a wide range of opportunities to take part in high‑quality sport, competitions and festivals. Through the partnership, pupils experience a rich programme of events that help them develop new skills, build confidence and enjoy being active with others from across the district.
Being part of the partnership strengthens our PE offer, enabling children of all ages and abilities to represent the school, try new activities and learn the values of teamwork, resilience and fair play. We are also proud to hold the Gold Activemark Award, recognising our strong commitment to sport, physical activity and healthy lifestyles across the school.
