Overview

At our school, Religious Education (RE) follows the Essex SACRE Agreed Syllabus and is taught using the Saffron Academy Trust’s scheme of work, which we have carefully adapted to suit our mixed-age classes. This means learning is well planned and builds step by step, while still meeting the needs of children of different ages and starting points.

Through RE, children learn about a range of world religions and non-religious worldviews in a respectful and inclusive way. Lessons are built around big questions that encourage children to think, talk and reflect. Key ideas and vocabulary are revisited over time so children can remember what they have learned and deepen their understanding as they move through the school.

RE lessons are engaging and discussion-based, using stories, artefacts, pictures and experiences to help bring learning to life. We use floor books to record our learning journey, capturing shared discussions, children’s questions, reflections and work. These show how understanding develops over time and allow children to learn together, particularly within our mixed-age classes.

RE helps children to develop curiosity, respect and confidence in sharing their ideas. It also makes an important contribution to children’s spiritual, moral, social and cultural development, helping them to understand different beliefs and values and their place in the wider world.
