Overview

Our music curriculum aims to develop pupils’ confidence, creativity and enjoyment of music. Through singing, listening, performing, improvising and composing, pupils develop musical knowledge and skills while experiencing a wide range of musical styles and cultures. The curriculum is supported by the Charanga scheme and enriched through performances, cross‑curricular links and whole‑school musical events. Pupils learn through listening, singing, playing instruments, improvising and composing. Each year group builds on previous musical knowledge while developing new technical and creative skills.

Our pupils leave primary school with a secure understanding of key musical concepts, the ability to perform confidently, and an appreciation of a wide range of music. Regular performances such as concerts and productions allow pupils to showcase their learning and develop confidence.

We use clear assessment checkpoints to support pupils’ musical development. In KS1, pupils are encouraged to keep a steady pulse, sing simple songs, and play basic rhythms. In Lower KS2, they progress to reading simple notation, playing tuned instruments, and improvising short musical patterns. By Upper KS2, pupils are able to perform confidently in ensembles, compose structured pieces, and discuss music using appropriate musical vocabulary, demonstrating both their practical skills and understanding of musical concepts.
